Our Amazing Boat Trip to Koufonisi Island – A Hidden Paradise in Crete
4 min readBy Crete Travel Guide
Some places in Crete still feel untouched. Koufonisi — a protected islet off the southeast coast — is one of them, and getting there is half the joy.

The start of our adventure
Our day began in Makry Gialos, a small fishing village on Crete's southeast coast. We boarded the Triton, a traditional wooden sailing boat that takes up to 19 guests — small enough that the whole trip feels personal, with a crew that welcomes you like friends.

Sailing to Koufonisi
The crossing takes about 90 minutes, and the views of the Cretan Sea make the time disappear. Then Koufonisi comes into view: powdery white sand, water so clear the boat seems to float on air, and — because the islet is a protected NATURA 2000 wildlife refuge — no crowds, no shops, no noise.

Swimming, snorkelling, relaxing
There are two swim stops during the day and snorkelling gear is included. The underwater world is vivid and full of life — or you can just float in the calm blue and do absolutely nothing.

Lunch on board
Around 1:30pm the crew served a BBQ lunch on deck — Greek salad, grilled chicken, pork, fresh fish and bread, followed later by fruit. Wine, beer, raki and soft drinks were all included.

Why we recommend it
We left Koufonisi around 3:30pm and were back in Makry Gialos by five — sun-kissed and completely recharged. The trip costs around €110 per person, covering the boat, both swim stops, snorkelling gear, the BBQ lunch and drinks. For one of Crete's most beautiful hidden corners, it's genuinely worth it.
